    Scandinavian naming traditions

Old Norse naming often joined two elements, such as Thor- (the god) with -stein (stone), or Bjørn (bear) and Ulf (wolf), and many children were named after a dead relative in the belief that the name carried luck. Surnames were patronymic: Erik's son became Eriksson and his daughter Eriksdóttir. Iceland still uses this system, and the Icelandic Naming Committee (Mannanafnanefnd) approves new given names. Denmark keeps an official list of approved names, while Sweden and Norway register names through their tax and population authorities and can reject unsuitable ones. Today short names such as Emma, Ella, William, Noah and Liam top Nordic statistics.
