    Italian naming traditions

Italian families traditionally named the first son after the paternal grandfather and the first daughter after the paternal grandmother, then the maternal grandparents, so names repeat across generations. Saints' names are very common, and many Italians celebrate their onomastico (name day). Italian law does not allow a child to share the exact first name of a living father, or ridiculous names. Names usually end in -o for boys and -a for girls, as in Marco and Marta.
