Dutch naming traditions
A Dutch baby must be registered at the town hall (gemeente) within three working days of birth, and the official first names (doopnamen) are often longer, traditional names while the child is called by a short everyday name (roepnaam), so Johannes may be known as Jan or Hans. Traditionally the first son was named after the paternal grandfather and the first daughter after the paternal grandmother, then the maternal grandparents (vernoemen), which is why the same names repeat across generations. Short names such as Daan, Bram, Sem, Noah, Emma, Julia and Tess regularly appear near the top of the Dutch national statistics (CBS and the SVB name list).
