    Persian naming traditions

In Iran the newborn's name is often announced at a family gathering, and some families invite an elder to recite a prayer or call into the baby's ear. Iran's civil registration authority (Sabt-e Ahval) keeps an approved list of names and can refuse names it considers inappropriate or foreign. Many names come from the Shahnameh, Ferdowsi's 11th-century epic, such as Rostam, Sohrab, Tahmineh and Manijeh, and from Zoroastrian heritage, such as Mehr (the sun and friendship) and Anahita (the water goddess). Poetry by Hafez, Rumi and Saadi inspires names built from 'gol' (flower), 'mah' (moon), 'setareh' (star) and 'nour' (light), often joined into compound names like Mahsa or Golnar.
