    Sanskrit naming traditions

Hindu naming traditionally happens at Namakarana, one of the sixteen samskaras (life-cycle rites) described in the Grihya Sutras, usually held on the 10th, 11th or 12th day after birth. Many families ask a priest to cast the baby's horoscope; the Moon's position at birth gives the janma nakshatra (one of 27 lunar mansions), and each of its four padas is linked to a starting syllable such as Chu, Che, Cho or La for Ashwini. The Grihya Sutras also advise an even number of syllables for boys' names and an odd number for girls', a custom some families still follow. Names commonly honour a deity (Krishna, Lakshmi), a virtue (Satya, truth) or nature (Surya, sun), and the father or an elder traditionally whispers the name into the baby's right ear.
