    Chinese naming traditions

A Chinese name places the family name first, followed by a one- or two-character given name. Many families consult the baby's bazi (the 'eight characters' of the year, month, day and hour of birth) and choose characters that supply any of the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) that seem to be missing, often by using characters with that element's radical, such as 木 for wood or 氵 for water. Some lineages follow a generation poem (zibei), so all cousins of one generation share a character. Parents also weigh tones, avoid unlucky homophones, consider stroke count, and traditionally avoided using the names of elders or emperors (naming taboo). A baby's 'full month' (manyue) celebration is a common time to share the name.
