School admission age calculator
Which class can your child join? Based on NEP 2020: three years of pre-school from age 3, and Class 1 at age 6.
Cut-off dates vary by state and school board — check the admission notice for your school.
Quick answer
Under India's National Education Policy 2020, children start three years of pre-school (Nursery/Balvatika 1, LKG/Balvatika 2, UKG/Balvatika 3) at age 3 and join Class 1 at age 6, with age counted on the state's or school's cut-off date.
How eligibility is worked out
The calculator finds your child's exact age on the cut-off date for the academic year you choose, then matches it to the NEP 2020 foundational stage: age 3 for Nursery, 4 for LKG, 5 for UKG and 6 for Class 1.
Cut-off dates are set by states and school boards — 31 March is common, but some use 1 June, 31 July or other dates, and a few allow small relaxations. Always check the admission notice for your school.
Minimum age by class (NEP 2020)
Age completed on the cut-off date.
| Class | Minimum age |
|---|---|
| Nursery / Balvatika 1 | 3 years |
| LKG / Balvatika 2 | 4 years |
| UKG / Balvatika 3 | 5 years |
| Class 1 | 6 years |
Frequently asked questions
What is the age for Class 1 admission in India?
Six years completed on the cut-off date. NEP 2020 sets this age, and in 2024 the Ministry of Education asked all states to apply it.
Is the cut-off date the same in every state?
No. States and boards set their own dates, so a child born near the cut-off may be eligible in one state but not another.
My child misses the cut-off by a few days. What can I do?
Some schools allow a short relaxation; ask the school. Otherwise the child joins the class the following year.
What is Balvatika?
Balvatika is the name NEP 2020 uses for the three pre-school years before Class 1.
