    Baby Milk & Formula Calculator

Estimate how much formula or expressed breast milk your baby needs per day and per feed, by weight and age.

    When to seek medical help

    • Fewer than 6 wet nappies a day after the first week
    • Poor weight gain, ongoing vomiting, or refusing feeds
    • Your baby was born early or has a medical condition — ask for a personal feeding plan

Always make up formula exactly as the pack says. This calculator is a general guide and does not replace advice from your doctor or health visitor.

    Frequently asked questions

How much milk does a baby need per day?

Up to 6 months, a common guide is about 150 ml per kg of body weight per day (around 2.5 oz per lb), up to about 960 ml (32 oz).

    How many feeds a day?

Newborns usually feed 8 or more times a day, dropping to about 6 by 3–6 months and around 4 milk feeds once solids are established.

Does this work for breastfed babies?

Breastfed babies feed on demand and you cannot see how much they drink. Use these figures only as a rough guide for expressed milk in bottles.

My baby wants more or less than this — is that OK?

Yes, babies vary. Follow hunger and fullness cues and check wet nappies and weight gain with your health visitor or doctor.
