    Child height predictor

Estimate adult height from both parents' heights (mid-parental height method).

    WhatsApp

    Quick answer

A child's expected adult height (mid-parental height) is the average of the parents' heights plus 6.5 cm for boys or minus 6.5 cm for girls. Most children end up within about 8.5 cm either side of that figure.

    How the prediction works

Doctors use the mid-parental (target) height to check whether a child's growth fits their family. For a boy, add 13 cm to the mother's height, add the father's height and divide by two; for a girl, subtract 13 cm from the father's height, add the mother's height and divide by two.

The result is a target, not a guarantee: nutrition, health and the timing of puberty also affect final height.

    Frequently asked questions

How accurate is a height predictor?

Most children reach an adult height within about 8.5 cm of their mid-parental height, so it gives a range rather than an exact number.

Can my child grow taller than predicted?

Yes. Good nutrition, sleep and health help a child reach their potential; some children end up outside the range.

    When do children stop growing?

Girls usually stop growing about two years after their first period (around 15–16); boys usually by 17–19.

Does it work for adopted children or with one parent's height?

It needs both biological parents' heights. Without them, follow your child's own growth curve on the growth percentile calculator instead.

Talk to your doctor if your child

    • Is growing much more slowly than other children their age
    • Falls well below the height range expected from their parents
    • Shows signs of puberty very early or very late
