    Greek naming traditions

Greek families traditionally name the first son after the paternal grandfather and the first daughter after the paternal grandmother, with the next children named after the maternal grandparents. The name is formally given at the Orthodox baptism, often around a year after birth, and until then the baby may simply be called 'baby' (bebis). Because most names belong to a saint, Greeks celebrate their name day (giorti) on that saint's feast, often more than their birthday. Classical names from mythology and history, such as Athena or Alexandros, are also popular.
